Witch spells: how they work and how to write your own

What is a witch spell?

A witch spell is an energy that you create and channel, either alone or in a group, to effect change and make something happen. That ‘something’ could be very personal (to bring love into your life) or broader (to help with the harvest of the season, not so common these days!). It can be expressed in words and rituals or in quiet contemplation.

You build the power of a witch spell by mentally projecting your faith, feelings, and visualizations, but you can also intensify this power with the use of materials such as candles, incense, crystals, and herbs.

Are Wicca Spells Different Than Witch Spells?

Not necessarily, as they both focus on very similar methods. This is because, historically, Wicca and witch share the same roots, and Wicca took its name to break away from the stigma and persecution that had been attached to the term ‘witch’. But while Wiccan spells can be personal, you’ll also have the benefit of your coven’s experience and collective spells to work with. Witch spells are most often personal only.

It is a central part of the Wiccan religion to work as one with the entire universe, the collective force of its elements being more powerful than any one of them alone, and this is why the pentagram is their religious symbol. Many lonely witches also benefit from this principle, as it promotes respect for the world around us, so even if you don’t study any other part of Wicca, look this up!

It is an accepted universal law that when you cast a spell, you will receive the energy you channel into it. Some even believe that this will return tripled. So a word of warning about casting negative spells or hexes on others. This will revert to you as the creator of the energy, so you may want to heed the old saying, ‘Be careful what you wish for’!

Focus your energies on positive events and try to aim for spells that contribute, not only to your life, but to the lives of others and to the world in general.

How to cast a witch spell

Make sure you have prepared it! It’s not a good idea to just try to improvise. You will find that it is more difficult than you imagine. Gather your spell writing, materials, and take yourself to a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed.

If you want to cast spells on a regular basis, you may want to set up a wiccan altar for this purpose. Again, what you keep on your altar is a totally personal matter, but always keep your Book of Shadows (your journal for taking notes), your ingredients for your current spell, and any tools you need close at hand so you don’t interrupt the flow. .

Your own spell versus someone else’s

You may think it’s easier to cast spells that someone more experienced has written, or that have been created many years ago. Without a doubt, they can be very effective and also useful in the first days when you lack confidence. However, your own spells will be even more powerful because your energies will be first hand, so try to write your own as soon as possible.

Traditionally, witch spells come in rhyme, but you don’t have to worry about this if it means you’re in trouble. However, rhymes can help create rhythm and a sense of fun, so if it comes your way, go with the flow.

Write your own witch spells

Writing witch spells is a skill you’ll develop over time, so start simple. The effects of missing something critical can be worse than not trying the spell at all, so be careful not to overexert yourself. Here are some basic tips on what to include in your own witch spells:

Don’t be too specific about what you want. If you need a new car, try not to focus too much on a specific model, as the Gods and Goddesses may have knowledge of something that suits your needs better and therefore you will only be limiting what you will receive.

Don’t be too lazy! It sounds like a contradiction to the previous point but, sticking to the example of the car, when you ask for divine help, include your reasons for wanting it, eg. To go to work, to visit family. This helps justify your reasons and can also prevent you from getting the car and then finding out that it will only take you to the top of the road!

Try to make sure that what you ask for is for the greater good and not just for totally selfish reasons. Again, remember that you are channeling energy.

Use visual cues if you find it helps. Get a photo of what you want and place it in front of you while you cast the spell.

Ask the Gods and Goddesses for help to complete whatever you have left out. If you have put enough thought and effort into your spell, divine assistance should be available.

It was once firmly believed that witches could make love potions powerful enough to change a person’s free will, one of the most famous cases being Henry VIII who was supposedly captured by Anne Boleyn in this way! However, it is not as simple as that and if someone is not willing to be in love with you then a potion or spell is not going to change that fact.

However, there are things you can do to help the natural course of love a bit. There are certain ingredients that are useful for love spells, so get them and experiment with:

A very good way to start a simple but very effective witch spell is to use a candle. Certain colors bring with them certain energies and by combining this energy with one of the core elements, namely fire, you increase its potency. For the spell to be effective you will need to reserve the time to sit in front of the candle and concentrate on what you want to happen. It is better to try it in one go, but it is also okay to burn the candle for 3 nights.

You will need to visualize the future and imagine yourself in love, earning money or whatever you want.

If using anointing oils, go bottom to top to increase spells and back to banish or reduce. Remember, the rules of the universe are often very simple and incorporate good common sense.
