Southern Living Comfort Food: A Delicious Journey Down Memory Lane

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when someone asks you what your favorite comfort food is? Mine is baked mac n cheese that is a bit crunchy.

I love to eat, so when the bookSouthern comfort food I found my desk, I just had to check it out. After flipping through the index, I read the foreword, which is almost as good as the recipes!

Most of the 150 comfort food recipes are accompanied by full-page color photos. Illustrations or photographs are particularly useful for cooks like me who are curious about the final presentation.

The book covers: comfort food classics, breakfast anytime, fresh from the garden, casseroles and more, soups and stews, desserts, and holidays and special occasions.

My favorite comfort food, mac n cheese, is the first recipe for comfort food classics. Mac n Cheese takes on a whole new meaning with Three Cheese Pasta Bake. This recipe is followed by more of my favorites including Gonzales Meatloaf, Garlic Butter Mashed Potatoes, Lemon Garlic Roast Chicken with Sautéed Green Beans, The Perfect Burger, French Fries, Chicken Pot Pie, Short Ribs Classic BBQ, Chicken Fried Steak, Pork Chops, Cabbage and Apples, and Mom’s Fried Chicken.

Farmers Market Scramble, Pepper Cheese Crackers, Potato Chip Casserole, Honey Buttermilk Pancakes, Cinnamon Raisin Muffins, Benedict Waffles, and Carmel Nut Bread are just a few of the breakfast recipes at any moment.

Fresh from the garden includes delicious recipes like homemade applesauce, corn pudding, crispy fried okra, summer squash casserole, and fried green tomatoes.

You’ll be the hit of the party when you arrive with any of the casserole dishes and more. My favorites include the chicken and rice casserole, ham gratin potatoes, manicotti with salsa, taco casserole, and twice-baked mashed potatoes. A fresh take on comfort food on the go!

Sops & Stews includes two chicken soup variations: Chicken and Wild Rice Soup and Chicken Noodle Soup. Also featured in the soups and stews are recipes for “baked” potato soup, black bean soup, 30-minute chili, and easy Brunswick stew.

Souvenirs are made of old-fashioned peanut butter cookies, giant oatmeal cookies, double fudge brownies, Mississippi mud, million dollar pound cake, banana pound cake, and peanut butter cake. They are just a sample of the delicious Dessert recipes.

Fine Christmas Ham, Birthday Cake, Root Bear Baked Beans, Popcorn Balls, Roast Turkey with Gravy, Cornbread Dressing, Pumpkin Chess Cake and Peanut Butter Fudge, Mrs. Floyd and Walter’s Pecan Pie and you have a recipe for almost every holiday and special occasion.

You will find this book at your local public library, but you may want to spend $ 29.95 and purchase it at your local bookstore. I think it is worth the investment.
