Possible remake of Pokémon Gold and Silver for Nintendo DS?

A possibly fake scan has been circulating on the internet drawing the attention of all Pokemon fans. It is a scan that presents two covers that expose what appears to be a new version of Pokémon Gold & Silver for Nintendo DS. Although I’m sure many fans were excited to see this scan, there has been no confirmation on a potential remake yet. Other sources indicate that GameFreak (developers of The Pokemon video game series) has bought the rights to the names Dusk Gold and Dawn Silver. Although the idea doesn’t seem all that unlikely, there is still no hard evidence.

pokemon summary

In the latest versions of Pokémon (Diamond, Pearl and Platinum) a new migration system was installed where you could transfer Pokémon from any of the GameBoy Advance games such as: FireRed, LeafGreen, Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald. This addition was needed for those devoted trainers who wanted to stay true to the Pokemon motto and set the goal of trying to catch them all. There was no other way to have a complete list of all Pokémon without this migration system. With the remakes of Pokémon Red & Blue Version, titled Fire Red & Leaf Green, for the GBA, one would be able to catch Pokémon from the Kanto and Johto regions just like in the previous GameBoy releases, except now it is ported over to Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald or even directly to Diamond, Pearl and Platinum were possible. Transfers from GameBoy to GBA were impossible due to an unbalanced Pokémon stat system. Outside of the Pokemon migration, Game Freak used the GBA slot further by allowing players to insert their old Pokemon GBA games to manipulate the appearances of certain Pokemon in areas that were otherwise unreachable. So now there was a way to catch virtually all updated Pokemon, outside of Pokemon conventions that featured event-specific Pokemon.

Nintendo DSi and Pokemon

On November 1, 2008 in Japan, Nintendo released its latest version of DS lite; the Nintendo DSi. With a variety of mods added, one that stood out to many Nintendo fans was that it will no longer support GBA cartridges. This did not sit well with the Pokémon community. Although its new features and new look appealed to the majority, this would create a huge inconvenience for most Pokemon fans. Pokemon migration would be impossible. Fans would benefit more from keeping their Nintendo DS lite while the migration system worked. Many believe that the Nintendo DSi’s lack of GBA support is what led to rumors and false scans in the new versions of Pokémon Gold and Silver for the DS, making it easier for players to trade Pokémon from previous regions without having to migrate them. This would also present a problem for players who are relying on their GBA games to try to transfer or capture certain types that cannot be obtained any other way.

poke rap-up

With all the facts weighed up, it’s safe to say that a Gold & Silver remake would be a beautiful addition to the Pokemon series. Me being a fan, personally I would like to see a new version of these two classics. I have tons of great memories with these games, but I’m also careful to keep my feet on the ground and not get my hopes up for something that, deep down, we all know might not happen. For those who want to add some information about the rumors, feel free to comment and add any other information about Dusk Gold and Dawn Silver. We can all agree that rumor or not, the idea of a new version is not that far-fetched. =)
