Maui Vacation Ideas: Fun and Affordable Activities for Your Hawaiian Stay

For many of us, traveling to Hawaii involves a great deal of expense; Plane tickets to this beautiful chain of islands can be prohibitively expensive. That’s why so many visitors to Hawaii and Maui tend to look for inexpensive activities to enjoy while there. Fortunately, it’s easy to plan a Maui vacation that won’t break the bank. There are many affordable activities and attractions on this lush island. The following are some activities that visitors to the island will not want to miss.

Visit Maui’s Black Sand Beaches – The island boasts over 30 miles of stunning beaches, from the typical shades of white and golden sand to red sand and even rare black sand. Made up of tiny pebbles of shiny black lava that makes a beautiful contrast to the color of the ocean, these exotic beaches are a must-see for any visitor. The two most popular black sand beaches are at Hana Bay, ten miles past Haleakala National Park, and Honokalani Beach in Wainapanapa State Park. Both of these excellent beaches can be accessed via the Hana Highway.

Fly Over Hawaii by Helicopter – Many people don’t realize it, but only 78% of Maui is accessible by helicopter. There’s no better way to get a real feel for the lay of the land than to hop aboard a helicopter tour. Many operators can be found, and most vacationers will find the rates reasonable enough. You’ll never forget the experience of flying just above the verdant jungles, waterfalls and other beautiful topography of Hawaii.

Hike the Mountains – The West Maui mountains are like nothing most people have ever seen before. Unfortunately, most visitors to the island have a limited amount of time and cannot get to know them very well. That’s why so many people opt for zip line adventures during their Maui vacations. On a zip line adventure, you’re safely strapped into a harness as you glide over the island’s mesmerizing topography on a special line. It’s an experience you don’t want to miss!

Immerse yourself in Hawaiian culture at a luau: Hawaii’s cultural traditions are truly unique, and there’s no better way to get acquainted with them than by attending a luau. They are usually held on the waterfront at sunset. Some resorts offer luaus to guests as part of a package, while others offer them at reduced prices. One of the highlights, for many, is the succulent kalua pig that is cooked during what is known as an imu ceremony.

Get Up Close to a Volcano: No Hawaiian vacation would be complete without seeing one of its many volcanoes up close. It is worth the day trip and a short flight to the Big Island to visit the Volcanoes National Park. The summit of the mighty Kilauea volcano can be easily traveled via Crater Rim Drive, an 11-mile drive that wraps around the summit caldera and traverses both desert and rainforest as well as the caldera floor. The road has plenty of access to scenic stops and short walks to further explore the area. The incredible close-up view of an active volcano is sure to be an unforgettable adventure.
