Importance of social etiquette

Social etiquette is nothing more than following a set of rules, but it is an important set of life skills. Social etiquette is knowing what to say and do in a social situation. While it can be hard to know the most elegant way to act at any given moment, knowing the basics of social etiquette will steer you in the right direction and save you a lot of embarrassment at your next social function. So, let’s take a look at some of the basic social norms that must be adhered to:

1. Remember to remember the names. It’s important to remember people’s names so you can introduce them to others and build relationships with new people early on. If you have a hard time remembering names, try matching a person you know with another person you know (or celebrity, athlete, etc.) with the same name.

2. Always use please and thank you. This is a basic rule of social etiquette that many people have sadly forgotten. When you say please and thank you, you’re extending kindness to your host or hostess, your date, and any servers who serve you while you’re at a function. Sending a thank you note to the host is another basic foundation of social etiquette.

3. Do not gossip or speak ill of anyone in social events. This includes ex-boyfriends or girlfriends, former bosses and colleagues, estranged friends, neighbors, acquaintances, and even your vet. There are several reasons not to put people down in public. In fact, the world is small, and it is quite possible that the words you say about someone will be repeated at a later date. Second, talking bad about someone is not elegant. Remember, someone at the event could be your next boyfriend, boss, or confidante. You don’t want to isolate yourself from others before they get to know you.

4. Don’t be boastful. There is a time and a place to talk about your achievements, particularly when someone asks you a question about them. While you should project confidence when you talk about yourself, strive to strike a balance between asking other people questions and taking the focus away from yourself.

5. Follow proper etiquette while dining. At any social event, it’s important to focus on the guests, not the food. No matter how delicious the food might taste, try to stay tuned to what others are saying and contribute to the conversation over a meal. This etiquette is not only appropriate, but it will prevent you from overeating. Of course, practice good food etiquette by using proper utensils, wiping your mouth, taking small bites, chewing with your mouth closed, and not burping after a meal. When it comes down to it, social etiquette is good common sense. But good common sense is very rare! Therefore, if you want to be treated well at a social gathering, you must be aware of etiquette yourself. The good news is that the points mentioned above are not rocket science and can be easily practiced with conscious effort.

Happy socializing!
