There are many ways to work from home, and the Internet can be a great place to find those great opportunities. There are many places on the internet where you can find these work from home jobs, but the best website I have found is Craigslist.
Craigslist is a classifieds website that allows people from all over the world to post and browse classifieds for free. In fact, Craigslist has been blamed as the main culprit in the bankruptcy of newspapers.
Legitimate jobs from home
Craigslist has a strong core value of providing legitimate classified ads. The way Craigslist is set up, it’s difficult for a spammer or online marketer to automatically post large amounts of ads on Craigslist. Someone posting jobs from home has to go and do it manually. This, in addition to its flagging feature, tends to keep spammers and scammers away from Craigslist and provides a safe haven for real, legitimate work-at-home jobs and people looking for work-at-home opportunities.
There are scammers on Craigslist, but they are very few and easy to spot. I’ll explain how you can spot a scammer later in this article. But for the most part, the ratio of work-from-home scams is relatively low compared to legitimate ones.
How to find a job from home on Craigslist
Here, I will go through the step-by-step process of finding a good and legitimate work from home job on Craigslist. You may have to go through this process several times before you find the right one for you, but it will only take a few minutes of your time.
Step 1 – Go to the Craigslist website
Go to Craigslist.com. Craigslist will automatically read your IP address (don’t worry if you don’t know what that means) and find out what city you’re currently in. It will then automatically send you to the local version of the Craigslist website.
For example, if you were located in Seattle and went to the Craigslist website, it will automatically send you to Seattle Craigslist as you can see in the image below. Since you are looking for work from home, the whole world of Craigslist is yours. You can search for work-at-home opportunities in Chicago, Seattle, New York City, Charlotte, Atlanta, or Boston, even if you live in Portland.
That’s the beauty of working from home. You can go in later and look at different cities if you want, and I’ll talk more about that later. Also, if you live on the west coast, that means you can get up early at 5 or 6 am to work and leave early to enjoy the rest of the afternoon.
Step 2: Go to the Jobs Section

Click on the ‘jobs’ link. Then, to find work from home, check the ‘telecommuting’ and ‘contract’ boxes and then click the ‘search’ button. By limiting your search to just telecommuting and contract jobs, you have a better chance of finding work-at-home opportunities.

If you have experience in a certain area or want to explore a specific type of work from home, instead of clicking the general ‘jobs’ link, you can click on one of the more specific areas, such as ‘business/management’, ‘sales/business developer’ or ‘manager/office’ to further narrow your search.
Step 3: How to find good work-at-home opportunities and how to avoid scams
There are plenty of great, legit work-at-home jobs on Craigslist, you just have to know how to spot them. In many cases, the opportunities will be from businesses and employers in your own local area, increasing the likelihood that it will be legitimate work from home. So what should you look for in a work-from-home opportunity and an employer?
#1 Company Description
If they don’t have a description of what type of company it is, then it’s probably not worth it. There are 2 reasons why companies generally don’t describe their business. Number 1, because they are a work from home scam. Number 2, or because they are too lazy.
How can you tell the difference? If they are a work-at-home scam, they will usually link to another website, and the website will usually have a name like “financial freedom” or “make $10,000 a month!” or something of that nature. If you’re getting that kind of feeling, it’s probably a scam, or a lot harder than it sounds. These are not worth the money, and probably not legitimate work from home jobs.
If the company is just being lazy, the description is often short and boring. This is probably a legitimate work from home job. But it may not be the type of company you want to work for. If your description is short, so could be your training and support once you start with them.
The best work-at-home jobs are those whose companies have long descriptions, list a company website, and list realistic earning potential. You should also look at what makes them different from other companies or if they are a growing company. Growing companies are the best to work for, even if they start small, because that means they have something new that is in demand and their future is more secure. Legitimate work from home jobs are just that, jobs. Don’t think you can make easy money anywhere. To make a lot of money at a work-at-home job, you’ll need to work, and if you don’t have a skill, you may need to get one.
#2 Pay Description
Make sure they give you an idea of what you will be doing and how long it will take. If it seems very easy to you, be careful. If it seems like a somewhat difficult but decent payout, it’s probably legit. Remember, if it was that easy, everyone would be doing it and the pay wouldn’t be good. That’s just basic economics. Who wouldn’t want to work from home and earn $500 a day? That’s not to say it doesn’t happen, but those are people who have some experience and a skill set that they can draw on. You can too, but it requires work, learning and experience.
For example, a reasonable wage for a work-from-home appointment scheduler would be $10/hour or $15-20 per appointment set. Some industries that have a harder time getting appointments may pay up to $250 per appointment, but of course, you won’t get that many. If they say you can make $250,000 by scheduling appointments from home, it’s probably either a scam or so difficult that it’s not worth doing. This would not be a good work from home.

To get started, you need to have a computer, internet, and a phone, but most people reading this article would have that. Other than that, if the company requires you to buy something or pay a fee, move on… it’s probably not a legitimate work from home job.
Step 4: Contact the employer
Just follow the instructions provided by the Craigslist job-at-home post. If you want to streamline your efforts, have a general cover letter and resume template that you can quickly adjust for work from home and copy and paste.
Look for employers who seem to know how to handle the work of home workers. How do you know? You will be able to know immediately. They will know what questions to ask you, they will tell you right away what they expect and what you should expect from them.
