Views from seats around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway track
In part 3 of this series, we describe the various views of the outdoor seating on the south end of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The southern end of the Brickyard covers just over a track mile and includes Southwest Vista, South Vista, Grandstand G, and Southeast Vista.
RESERVED SEATS: At Brickyard 400 all seats are reserved. But if you want to reserve the same seat year after year, you must purchase your tickets directly at Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS). Getting on the renewal list requires that you not only purchase your tickets from IMS, but also requires that you purchase your tickets each year immediately after the race. Once you get on the IMS ticket buying list, you can also request to be added to the list to upgrade your tickets as better tickets become available.
It may be many years before you earn the right to purchase prime tickets, but if this is your goal, you’d better start now. IMS will allow you to reserve your seats for life and then they will allow you to pass your renewal rights on to your children. However, they will not allow their children to pass it on to their children.
GRANDSTAND INFORMATION: Indianapolis Motor Speedway offers inside and outside grandstands. All grandstands inside the track end with Terrace in their name. Grandstands on the outside of the track include Vistas, Paddock, Penthouse or a Grandstand with a letter in its name. The IMS have removed all the infield grandstands in the turns. If your seating chart shows grandstands on the inside corner of the track, it’s out of date. Please refer to the updated seating chart on the Brickyard 400 Seating Photos page on this website for an up-to-date seating chart. The following list provides detailed information on each grandstand at the circuit.
SOUTHWEST VIEW: The views from Southwest Vista located at the end of Turn 1 at the southern end of Indianapolis Motor Speedway provide a view of Turn 1, the short slide, and Turn 2. Seating in this grandstand is backless bench type. There is no roof covering these grandstands. As with most other grandstands at the Brickyard, the best views are at the top of the stands. You must have seats in the rows of double letters to have a good view of the track. There is no view of the front directly from this grandstand. The closest parking lot to this grandstand would be the Front Gate Lot and Lot 2.
SOUTH VISTA: Sitting on the outside of the track between turns 1 and 2 is the South Vista. This grandstand offers views of Turn 1, Turn 2 and the short slide. From these seats it is not possible to see the front in a straight line or the rear. The seats are backless bench type. There is no roof structure covering this grandstand. The closest parking lot to this grandstand would be the Main Gate Lot and Lot 2. The rows of double letters offer the best view of the track. Seats in the single letter rows have a somewhat less extensive view of the track and are partially obstructed by the safety fence.
GRANDSTAND G: This grandstand is located on the outside of the track on the south short slide. The seats in this grandstand are backless benches and there is no roof covering the seats. The front door lot and lot 2 would probably be the closest parking lots. The best views are at the top of the grandstand. This grandstand is somewhat smaller, in terms of height, than the Vista Sur, SW and SE grandstands. Turns 1 and 2 can be seen from this grandstand. Views from seats in the single letter rows are further obstructed by the safety fence.
SOUTHEAST VIEW: This grandstand is located at Turn 2 on the outside of the track. The seats in this section are backless bench seats. There is no roof covering this grandstand. The best views of the track from this grandstand will be found in the 17, 18, 19 and 20 high sections on the rows of double letters. The Front Gate lot and Lot 2 would likely be the closest designated IMS lots. Views from the single letter rows are somewhat obstructed by the catching fence.
