Scarier Than the Boogie Man – Bacteria in Drinking Water

Under no illusions, despite advances in the municipal water purification process over the last 100 years, bacteria in drinking water and other pathogens continue to affect water supplies across the country.

Now, as science and detection techniques advance, scientists have discovered a variety of microorganisms that are resistant to chlorine. This means that they actually persist in the “safe drinking water” that comes out of our taps.

Microorganisms like Aeromonas, Cryptosporidium, Giardia, Legionella, and Pseudomonas continue to show up in water supplies across the country with far less reassuring regularity.

And that’s not all. Recent studies have revealed that these microbiological problems have been showing up in bottled water, water coolers, and water lines in dentists’ offices.

Even some undercounter reverse osmosis water purifiers, which ironically are supposed to remove contaminants from drinking water, are breeding grounds for these microorganisms.

In Milwaukee in 1993, a cryptosporidium outbreak killed 100 people and some 40,000 became ill with vomiting, diarrhea, etc.

Ultraviolet disinfection (uv purifiers) uses ultraviolet radiation to sterilize the DNA of microorganisms and prevent them from reproducing. However, this type of device must be used in conjunction with a more conventional water filter to remove sediment from tap water.

You see, sediment is the Achilles heel of an ultraviolet water filter. The sediment casts a shadow when exposed to ultraviolet light. Any bacteria in that shade cannot be killed by ultraviolet light. Therefore, for ultraviolet purification to work effectively, tap water must be free of sediment.

Conventional domestic water purification is inadequate to deal with the superbug threat to your health and that of your family.
