How to tow a vehicle in an emergency

The crane uses two rotating arms that go under the front tires and lift them off the ground. The rear tires remain on the ground. This is an acceptable way to tow your vehicle.

WARNING

Attempting to lift or tow your vehicle by the bumpers will cause serious damage. Bumpers are not designed to support the weight of the vehicle. Never tow your vehicle with only a rope or chain. It is very dangerous, since the ropes or chains can move from one side to another or break. Improper towing, such as towing behind an RV or other motor vehicle, can damage the transmission. If your vehicle must be towed with the front wheels on the ground:

1. Check the ground under the vehicle around where the transmission case is for fluid leaks. If you find a leak, call a professional towing service and have your vehicle inspected by a dealer.

2. Place a cloth on the edge of the cover. Pry carefully with a small flat-blade screwdriver or metal nail file to remove the cover. The detachable tow hook mounts to the anchor in the front bumper.

3. Take the tow hook and the wheel nut wrench from the boot.

4. Screw the tow hook into the hole and tighten securely with the wheel nut wrench.

5. Attach the towing hitch to the tow bar.

6. Start the engine.

If the engine is difficult to start, turn the ignition switch to the ACCESSORIES or ON position.

7. Manual Transmission Models: Shift into neutral.

8. Continuously Variable Transmission Models: Depress the brake pedal.

9. Shift to Drive mode and hold for five seconds, then Neutral

10. All models: Release the parking brake.

If your vehicle must be towed with the front wheels on the ground:

CVT models with continuously variable transmission only:

If you can’t shift the transmission or start the engine, you will damage the transmission. Your vehicle must be transported with the front wheels off the ground.

Models with the keyless entry system have an ENGINE START/STOP button instead of an ignition switch.

NOTE:

If you are unable to start the engine, you may experience the following while the vehicle is being towed.

Braking can become difficult since the power assist of the braking system is disabled. The steering wheel becomes heavy when the power steering system is disengaged.

Turning the ignition switch to LOCK (0*1 locks the steering wheel.

With the front wheels on the ground, it is best to tow the vehicle no more than 80 km and keep your speed below 55 km/h. Going down a long grade heats up the brakes.

This can prevent the brakes from working properly. If your vehicle needs to be towed on an incline, call a professional towing service.
