How to survive the Espit Chupitos bar in Barcelona
Espit Chupitos is a famous bar in Barcelona, really an authentic city attraction that you shouldn’t miss during your Spanish night out. Espit Chupitos is a shot bar. What is a shot? A shot is a shot, an alcoholic beverage served in small glasses. It can consist of one type of alcohol or a cocktail of different alcohols, mixed with other drinks, often shaken, blended, or layered.
The particular thing about this place is that they offer a list of 500 original shots, all unique and protected by copyright -that is, you can only have original shots in one of the Espit Chupitos bars- and they are served with tricks, tricks and games funny. Many shots involve fire, candy, tricks, and in one case whipped cream and a sex toy (this one is called “Monica Lewinsky”…). If you want to see some interesting fire games, ask for a Harry Potter or The Devil’s Pact. Espit Chupitos also offers cocktails: if you go with friends try the 1 liter glass to share with straws.
A shot alone is quite cheap, it costs 2 euros, the one liter glass costs 10. But why this “How to survive” guide? Well, Espit Chupitos is not a bar like the others, so you have to be prepared to enjoy the experience to the fullest. Here it is:
o It is very likely that if you go around midnight, the bar is full of people and the temperature is very high (also because of the fire). Be patient and take your time.
o The shots are served at the bar: if it is full of people you have to wait to order and get your place at the bar. Try to be there when someone leaves a place.
o When you finally get to the bar, don’t leave it to go to the bathroom, meet friends or smoke outside. The suggestion is to stay there until you have enough or you will have to wait a few more minutes.
If you are looking for a place to have a drink in a relaxed atmosphere and chat with your friends, better avoid this place. Espit Chupitos is a crazy bar, always full of people and with a very fun atmosphere.
You can find some Espit Chupitos located in different points of the town: the “original” one from Barcelona, the most famous, is located on Calle Arribau 77, on the right side of the Eixample; a second is nearby, a five-minute walk away and is inside the ‘La Fira’ nightclub: it can be a good option to continue the night since you can continue drinking their great shots and dancing on stage. It is a place halfway between a bar with some tables and sofas to be with friends and a nightclub with local Spanish, pop and commercial music. The address is Calle Provença 171, between Aribau and Muntaner. You can find a third Espit Chupitos in the Gothic quarter near the port (Paseo Colón 8). If you’re partying in the Las Ramblas areas, especially near the Columbus statue, think about hitting this bar for (at least) a couple of drinks. These three are probably the best-known bars in Espit, but here are others from the family: El Gato Negro at Consell de Cent 278, La Sal Barcelona at Avinguda de Manuel Azaña and two more in Sabadell and Tarragona. Espit Chupitos is the right place to start the night, before going to a disco or some other bar with friends.
