How not to pay child support

The responsibility for the welfare of a child is supposed to be divided equally between the parents. They are expected to work together to support and raise the child. Usually, however, most custody is awarded to one parent, with the other parent paying child support.

If you are the parent ordered to pay child support, there are a few things you should know, the most important of which is this: Never pay cash.

CASH PAYMENTS TO EX

Never. NEVER. NEVER EVER pay cash. This seems like the easiest way to pay child support and make it easier for them and for you, especially if you are self-employed and work in a cash business. You’ll see it as “I’m doing my job, I’m supporting my children. It’s what the court ordered and I’m doing it.” True, True, True and True.

You’re also setting yourself up for a real pummeling.

Child support obligations never, ever, ever go away. Unless you can prove that you have paid them. I will repeat that.

CHILD SUPPORT OBLIGATIONS NEVER, EVER, EVER STOP. UNLESS YOU CAN PROVE YOU HAVE PAID THEM.

Many clients have come to me saying they paid their support each week or month in cash to their ex, but they just got a lawsuit for 15 years of past due child support. I ask them to have proof that they paid it, they say they paid it in cash. They are in deep, warm water.

No proof equals “you didn’t pay it.”
