How do the people of Begur celebrate the Fira d’Indians festival?

Different types of events and fairs are held on the Costa Brava. There are some important festivals that are known all over the world. The Fira D’Indians festival or the Indianos festival in Begur is one such festival. Begur is a small town where this traditional fair is celebrated with great fervor.

The festival has no connection to the aboriginal groups of America or residents of India. Indianos are a small category of people in Spain who had emigrated to Latin America to live a better life and then returned to their homeland millionaires.

In Begur, the Indiano population is quite large and the majority is settled in Cuba. The main theme of this festival is the warm relationship between Begur and Cuba.

The fair begins on the first Friday in September and runs well into Sunday night. The first time the festival started in 2004 and it was a great success. After that it became an annual event. It is a three day festival and the small town of Begur witnesses a lot of fun and activities during the festival. The fair starts with an official inauguration by political personalities and those linked to the world of the Indies.

On the first day, music and dancing take place at different locations in the city throughout the night. The next day there are several children’s activities such as a chocolate workshop followed by cocktail workshop classes. On the last day, modern dandies parade through the city wearing their vintage sports cars and singing habaneras on the beaches.

Shopping is the most important part of any fair. Thus, shopping is also part of Fira d’Indians. You can enjoy Cuban coffee beans, cocoa, rum, sausages, herbs and spices along with candies, chocolate and toys. The fair has a dress code of white linen clothing and toquilla straw hat. If you don’t have one, you can select a white shirt, pants because the dresses are available to buy at the fair. At the fair you can also buy traditional products such as hand-woven fishing nets, wrought metal items, baskets, espadrilles and more. There is a wide selection of different items that are worth buying if you want to keep a memory of the party for a lifetime.

Another important thing to enjoy at the festival is Latin American music in the wee hours of the morning. You can touch your feet anywhere at any time. Throughout the fair different musical activities take place. There are many traditional Habanera songs, street performances, and recreational activities from the colonial days that take place during the festival.

The most important drink served during the festival is the mojito. It is served in every corner in a brand glass that you can also keep as a souvenir of Begur. You can enjoy the drink along with delicious snacks that are part of the fair.

The festival gets bigger and better every year and it is well worth spending some time in Begur during this part of the year.
