Garlic – Use and Benefits as an Herbal Remedy

For several centuries Garlic has been at the service of humanity with its extraordinary medicinal properties. Its botanical name is Allium Satvium and it belongs to the Alliaceae family. It is simply a widely naturalized, bulbous herb. Garlic has several varieties, which again fall into two groups: single clove and multi-clove. Being common, most garlic varieties fall into the latter group. Terms like wild garlic, elephant garlic and pearl garlic, etc. are generally used to refer to Garlic varieties from both groups. Single clove garlic which usually grows in the Yunan province of China and elephant garlic are often mentioned as the best in garlic.

Garlic Properties: It has important properties such as Vitamin C, Iron, Calcium, Potassium, Zinc, etc. Also, when squeezed, garlic produces a compound called allicin, which again has been shown to be an effective antibiotic and also an antifungal. Also, it has various sulfur compounds like Aillin, Ajone, Dithiin, etc. Another important compound available in garlic, known as alixin, has been considered antitumor in recent medical studies. It can also show good results in cancer prevention in the coming days!

Garlic as a herbal remedy.: Garlic, being an herb rich in medicinal compounds, can be used to treat a number of different disorders in our bodies. Therefore, now is the time to take a look at its uses and benefits.

  • Rheumatism:- This is a very common medical complaint of people who are in their old age. However, it can be treated at home with the help of garlic cloves. To use it, you just have to take at least one clove along with rice a day. Applying garlic oil on the affected area will also give you relief.
  • Gas:- To treat the gas problem that we often face, garlic can be helpful. Simply crush two garlic cloves in a cup of water and drink the solution every morning on an empty stomach. Here the word of caution is: don’t use more than two teeth, or you will cause the gas itself!
  • Disease: – Garlic is also very effective in preventing physical diseases. If you take two cloves in a cup of milk and drink it daily; soon you will regain your strength.
  • Headache, Migraine:- Another common and annoying medical complaint is headache. To treat it quickly, just use two drops of garlic juice as a nose drop.
  • Emphysema: – It is an abnormal condition of the lungs that hinders the ability to expel air; due to excessive smoking or chronic bronchitis. The use of garlic in such conditions will cure emphysema and increase the body’s immunity against it. For this, simply mix 2-3 drops of garlic juice in cold milk and drink the solution regularly.
  • Arteriosclerosis:- It means hardening of the arteries and garlic is one of the best herbal remedies. To use, just eat one clove of garlic regularly.

Apart from the above mentioned use, garlic is also helpful in many other disorders like fever, past injuries, strep throat, etc. However, it also has some disadvantages. As for example, it produces a strong odor due to the presence of a compound called Allyl Methyl Sulfide (AMS). This odor is very annoying and therefore steps must be taken to reduce it before use. One of the effective ways to get rid of this garlic smell is to use it with curd. Likewise, the excessive use of garlic can cause skin irritations and digestive problems. Diabetic patients who use insulin should avoid the use of Garlic.
