Borg Warner aluminum derailleur nuts – why are they better than nylon?
Borg Warner aluminum gear lever nuts are increasingly used in 4-speed manual gearboxes, found in Ford and Valient model cars. These are a great troubleshooter for a nagging issue faced for a long time with nylon derailleur nuts. This is a trusted component used in the Ford Borg Warner 4 speed manual transmission. These are most often used in race cars, race cars, hot rods, or for street use in everyday road cars.
Shift nuts are normally made of nylon. These are not very strong and the soft nylon material causes the thread to break causing the shifter to disengage from the gearbox. This is a common problem that racing cars face when making fast and hard gear changes and also in normal cars. This problem can be solved by using a Borg Warner nut made of aluminum. The aluminum in these nuts provides strength and therefore does not wear out easily.

These are extremely easy to install and you can do the installation yourself with these simple instructions. Unscrew the old nylon nut from the gearbox with the attached shifter. Unhook the E-clip, remove the spring and slide off the retainer plate. The old nylon nut can now be slipped on. Before doing this, make sure the bushing is not damaged. Slide the new aluminum shifter nut over the shifter and onto the hub after greasing. Add the retaining spring plate. Add the spring and re-insert the clip E. Finally, put the shifter back on the gearbox and tighten the alloy nut. You have installed your heavy duty aluminum shift nut.
