The importance of properly maintaining agricultural equipment

Your farm equipment is the backbone of your business, so it is vitally important that you keep it properly maintained on a regular basis. Doing so will maximize the life of your machinery and reduce the chances of breakdowns that can result in costly downtime.

If you have a larger operation, you will need to be as organized as possible to ensure that all the pieces of your farm equipment receive the attention they need. Try to organize maintenance by season, if possible, so you know what to do and when to do it. Don’t try to take care of everything at once. Divide your maintenance into different phases so that you are not overwhelmed and your operations are not delayed. Keep meticulous records of all your maintenance activities so you can easily know when to do them again.

It sounds obvious, but having the right tools is essential in order to maintain your machinery properly. Protect your tools from the elements so they’re ready when you need them. If you are not technically competent, hire a professional to take care of your maintenance so you can be sure the job will get done right the first time.

There are several different ways to provide basic farm equipment maintenance. For tractors, for example, make sure the brakes and motors are working properly. Drain and clean the fuel tanks of any machinery that is idle to decrease the chances of an explosion. If you have battery-operated machinery, disconnect the terminals before working on them to avoid the risk of electrocution.

Store all your machinery properly and keep it clean. Talk to your employees about wearing the proper protective clothing when working on any type of farm equipment. They should never wear any type of loose clothing or dangling jewelry. Also, not everyone will try to remove any type of blockage from machinery without first turning it off. Do not use gasoline or other hazardous materials for cleaning.

As important as maintenance is, it is equally important to do it safely. It is your responsibility to ensure that your employees are safe at all times, and this includes routine work. You must train them in the machinery they are working on so that they know it from top to bottom. Whether you have a small piece of land or a large piece of property, you need to make sure that everything is as safe as possible.

By investing some time in maintaining farm equipment, you are also making an investment in your land. The more reliable your machinery, the smoother your operations will be.
