Parents, meet your children!

Parents, no one knows our own children better than we do, right? We knew them even before they were born! Therefore, no one has known them for longer and no one has spent more time with them than we have! They are our little ones. They are small extensions of us. So of course we know them better than anyone.

However, although they are small versions of us, they are also small versions of our partner, as well as their environment, circumstances and times when they are growing up. And that time, space and place is different from what we parents grew up with. Furthermore, our children are also their own unique version of themselves.

So with so many variables and multiples at stake here, it has to make us wonder about our children’s complexity at least a little bit, doesn’t it? I mean, we think we really know who our kids are, but to be honest with you, I think sometimes adults don’t even know who we are …

Perhaps we should begin this process by questioning our beliefs about how well we really know our children. At the very least, maybe we should take some extra time to really get to know our kids even better than we think we do. Certainly going the extra mile wouldn’t hurt. And who knows what precious gem we can discover by giving a few more stones in the lives of our children?

So what should we ask our children? Easy. Everything we want that is not a yes or no question. Let’s have a little fun and ask them things like, “Who is your favorite superhero and why?” Now, “What are the five best things about being you?” Let’s be curious again, like a child.

Now, as my grandfather always said: “Go learn, lead and open the way to a better world for all of us.” Have fun getting to know your kids even better than you already do. And once again parents, thank you in advance for all that you do and all that you will do …
