Michael Mann – The Mann with the Lens

Flying Debris, Free Falling Dead, Weapon Flash, The Smooth Speed of Cars, and the Landscape of a City. These are some of the hallmarks of Michael Mann executed with freshness every time he brings a movie to the screen. There are many critics who have described it as excessive. But this is what defines Mann as a man who takes defeated subjects and shoots them with style. It is very detailed in the backstories of its characters that are projected on the screen through dialogue and passing emotions. Mann prepares by taking photos of where he would like to shoot and then begins his meticulous preparation for the film. It also takes a very different approach to lighting by sticking to many dark spaces to project very light cars.

Some of his most forceful works is the recent Collateral. This movie turned Tom Cruise into a wolf-like villain. Tom Cruise plays Vincent who invades the life of a taxi driver and changes his life in just one night. The movie is heavily cut with murder scenes that are structured with such precision that it leaves you wishing there were more. Music also played an important role in this film that launched a modern film noir. The film had some of the most memorable dialogue delivered by Tom Cruise. Michael Mann gave Tom plenty of room to show some of his athleticism on screen. Another aspect of this film is the landscape shots from the top of the buildings and from the sides of the mirrors that are reflected in the buildings. These shots gave this film the feeling of a different space that gives the city its own character. His action films are seminal works of art that sometimes even borrow from literature for a refined touch.

His most recent work Miami Vice also thus a different permutation of the same landscaping used in Collateral. This was more of a Mann improv. It had an even greater extension in this: the sea. This had its share of exquisite shots in the water. For those of you who thought this was similar, you just got fooled. It created a mood that mimicked Collateral, but the places and situations were different. This movie must have resembled Collateral only as the minds of identical twins. There was an extra fill of sensuality in this movie with the addition of the exotic Gong Li. There is a tribute in this movie given to Collateral with a suit that he wears while getting off the plane. The same one that Tom Cruise used in Collateral. The setting was more outlandish in this movie, but it was still separated by his unique eye for detail, especially with gun shots. This movie made others of the same genre and even television series seem premature.

Well-informed person is one of his most compelling works that relies heavily on the performance of the characters and their backstories. This movie is about a lawsuit against the tobacco industry that ultimately destroys a man’s life. There are some horror shots inflicted on the main character played by the overwhelming Russell Crowe that take your breath away. It gives us an indication of the extent to which this man was upset by the government. There are moments in this movie where there is no hope but it is when something like a mere role that makes the characters smile. This is one of those movies that has been given a lot of thought to fit the times and also get an overview of the movie’s procedures.

Another of his lesser known works is Ali. This movie takes us through the life of a man whose only brute force was his mouth. Will Smith’s performance makes us feel like he’s been waiting for this one to come along for a while. He almost throws enough punches to leave some of his contemporaries sore. This is a biopic that gives Mann a lot of room to improvise. But he chooses to let the character do the talking in this movie because of his beautiful personality. This movie explores this personality in his glory days by adding shine to this movie. One of the strongest moments in the film is the death of Malcolm X, which affects Ali’s future. He almost redefined himself after that incident. This journey this man undertakes is remarkable enough to make a contemporary film. Mann, with his limited scope, gives this character a legitimate place in history by making a movie.

All said and done Michael Mann is a quintessential visionary who reinvents himself at regular intervals. It keeps up to date by assuming all the new technologies and incorporating them into stories that leave us asking for more.
