Meditation – According to Eckhart Tolle

I started meditating in Thailand in 1993. Until then, I had never been interested in meditation. Little did I know that the one-week retreat at the Buddhist monastery would completely change the course of my life…

Thirteen years later, a friend lent me a copy of Eckhart Tolle’s book The Power of Now. It really made a deep impression on me and I’ve been a huge fan ever since.

Eckhart Tolle underwent a great spiritual transformation at the age of 29. Before the change, he had been depressed for years. Since the transformation, he dwells in a calming stillness.

After years of work, Tolle gradually came to understand what had happened to him. Now, seekers around the world benefit from his profound wisdom.

So what is it about Eckhart Tolle’s approach to meditation and spirituality that attracts so many seekers? For starters, their explanations are clear and easy to follow. Unlike many Buddhist teachings, Eckhart uses modern examples and language.

Eckhart Tolle Meditation

Tolle makes it very clear: the present moment is the path to happiness and deep wisdom. Furthermore, he states that there is no need for any advanced meditation techniques to progress on the spiritual path.

Here is one of Eckhart’s basic meditation instructions:

Sit comfortably in a chair and keep your arms in front of you, in the air. Then close your eyes and ask yourself, “Can I feel my hands?”

Perhaps you can feel heat or cold, some tingling or vitality in your palms. Don’t push yourself too hard, just relax and open up to the sensations in your hands.

Every time you notice a sensation, relax and stay with it for a while.

This simple meditation aligns you with the present moment, which in turn creates stillness and alert attention. As a result, any thinking activity is reduced.

Good luck!
