Inoue DVD Box Set Review

Of all the judo DVDs out there, the Inoue DVD is not one that I would have bought. There are many excellent and lightweight DVDs, such as Koga and Quellmalz. Fortunately for me, I was given a copy of the Inoue DVD and I must admit that it is easily the best Fighting Films DVD ever made. The only reason I would not have bought the Inoue DVD is due to the fact that I am a lightweight and Inoue is a heavyweight. Stereotypically heavyweights are Osoto garis, Harai goshi, Uchimata and Soto makkikomi. While, on the other hand, light Judokas make sacrifices with Seoi nage and Uchimata. Inoue DVDs come in a set of three DVDs, Judoka, Samurai, and Uchimata. Each DVD is 80-90 minutes long and the content is amazing.

Inoue is a Japanese judoka who has won 3 world titles and a gold medal at the Sydney Olympics. It was at these games that he won the gold medal match with a Uchimata textbook that many claim is the pitch of the century.

Throughout the DVD set there are movie clips in which Inoue talks about her early judo career and how her mother’s death really spurred her Judo. He held a portrait of his mother on the podium when he received his medal. Inoue also talks about how difficult it was to go from under 90 kilograms to under 100 kilograms weight division and the fact that he had to change his Judo to suit the stronger style in that division.

The throws Inoue makes are her favorite techniques, such as Osoto gari, Ouchi gari, Harai goshi, Ippon seoi nage, and her world famous Uchimata. Ne waza’s only technique worth mentioning is his break up with Koshi jime. The breakdowns of Tachi waza on this DVD are fantastic and it’s great to watch fight movies improving their game in their production as the last 101 Ippons and how-to videos have been in the exact same format and are getting pretty boring. However, this DVD is a hundred times better than DVDs of other fight movies. Each technique is divided into hands, feet, and hips with a separate video of each aspect of the throw. It gives you a great idea of what Inoue is thinking as she performs each rep. It’s a shame Inoue doesn’t speak English like Neil Adams makes the comment and you may miss some vital elements of Inoue’s instruction.

The examples from the competition are impressive and the footage they have used is really good with Inoue throwing her opponents with some amazing techniques. In my opinion, Inoue’s DVD set is a bit pricey, but it’s definitely worth buying if you’re looking for multiple tickets for Uchimata, Harai goshi, and Osoto gari. Again, the breakdowns are great and if Fighting Films goes their way, the next DVD of them is going to blow the Judo world out of the water.
