Happy ’80s pants: would you wear them again?

Happy 80’s rock pants! Why? Fun kid’s fabrics were used so most of us had our own unique happy pants! In Australia, happy pants were basic stretchy shorts, made from your child’s cotton fabric of your choice. The shorts weren’t too tight, not too baggy, and they were just above the knee in length.

Dolly Magazine (aimed at young teenagers, before they switched to Cosmo and Cleo magazines) released a pattern for the shorts. Since most of us were in high school, we had done Home Ec and made our own shorts.

These days, I probably couldn’t sew to save myself.

If you are thinking of making your own happy 80s pair of pants, you will need:

  • 1.50 m (1 ½ yards) of cotton fabric, 150 cm (60 “) wide
  • 1.50 m (1 ½ yards) of 1.5 cm (1/2 “) wide elastic.

When shopping for your fabric, consider the following:

  • Use kids cloth
  • Bold and bright designs
  • Easy to wear and comfortable cotton material to wear.

For those of you interested in making your own happy 80s pair of pants, or a good basic pair of shorts with your own choice of material, more information is available via the link at the end of this article.

Later, in the 90s, the happy pants were released commercially, however, there were two differences. The commercial pants were brightly colored patterns without any childish designs, and they were very long.

So, for the trendy eighties look, or to stamp your own style in current fashions, why not give the happy eighties pants a try. Pair your happy 80s pants with an 80s t-shirt. Don’t forget to roll up the sleeves and tie a knot in the corner, if it’s too big.

To add glamor, accessorize with bangles and an ’80s hairstyle.
