Today, millennials are fond of reading fictional stories and/or series like Harry Potter and Divergent, which are one of their favorites at all times. This doesn’t end up just reading the book, but seeing it as they were published as a film or movie. The last time we saw the movie, Les Miserables, which was written by Victor Hugo in the 19th century. Basically, the story began in 1862 in Paris; French Revolution. When the slaves or the criminals got off the shipwreck 24601, captain Javert stopped him and asked him to retrieve the flag, but it was difficult for him because it was too heavy, after that he received a parole and was invited to a priest’s house. and so the story began, 24601 who was Jean Valjean wants to be free from being a slave.

“Don’t forget my name. I’m Javert.” Said the captain, who paroled Jean Valjean and was named 24601, the man who is having a hard time retrieving a flag. Upon receiving parole, he was filled with rage that he was jailed for nineteen years, at hard labor, for breaking into a bakery, stealing a loaf of bread, and then trying to escape his life as a galley slave.

At this point, he was invited to a priest’s house and welcomed as if he were not an ex-con. At that moment, he realized something, his heart was filled with hope again by the priest’s words. The word returns as a sign of being free of him. He decided to start over but without being Jean Valjean. He became mayor and was called as Monsieur Madeliene. He noticed a commotion and there he met Fantine, who was forced to work as a prostitute for her to save Cossette’s life. Before Fantine’s death, he made a promise to find Cossette. When he met Cossette, he took care of her as if she were his own daughter. All these years as Monsieur Madeliene, the captain did not stop to look for him. But in the end, Cossette fell in love with Marius and Valjean decided to tell Marius the truth and then leave. Marius and Cossette are married when the Thénardiers come in and show off Jean Valjean. Marius forced them to say where Jean Valjean is. Jean Valjean was about to die when the newly married couple arrived. Jean Valjean was talking to Fantine in his mind. At that moment Valjean confessed and Cossette assures him that he will be fine.

The title itself already gives an idea of what it means. Les Miserables is a French word meaning ‘the miserable ones’. The characters in the story, especially Jean Valjean, were miserable.

It is miserable to escape and be free from being a slave. And then he met Fantine, who works at the factory and was unemployed. She was forced to work as a prostitute to save her daughter’s life. Cossette who was treated like a slave, Marius from being in love with Cossette and Eponine who was miserably in love with Marius. Captain Javert, who dedicated his life to being a captain, was exhausted and miserable because he ended his life. Slavery also represents history. The French who are starving in the streets and who cannot even protest in their own country. However, in the character of Jean Valjean he does not let it go, he frees himself from slavery.

With this evidence, symbolism and images, the author was able to clearly demonstrate that people cannot be slaves at any price or instance. The French Revolution received justice through the use of Victor Hugo’s poetic manner of writing.
