Art Book Review – George Inness – One of the Greatest Painters of the Nineties

The nineties had tremendous competition for great artisans and painters. One was George Inness, perhaps the best, although some might debate this. Of course, once you get familiar with his art, you’ll have to accept that he was in the top five for sure. To better illustrate this and perhaps persuade you to really look into these great talents of painters, I would like to recommend a very good art book:

“George Inness at the Los Angeles Museum of Art” edited by Nicolai Cikovsky and Michael Quick; Harper and Row Publishers; New York, NY; 1985. ISBN: 0-06-4307107-7

This book perhaps best explains life and times, and the inspiration behind some of George Inness’s best work. Each image is accompanied by all the details of the scene and the moment of his life. Many of the paintings in this book have explanations that go far beyond what the painting is about, but what critics, collectors, and the art world say.

The introduction and the first two chapters detail in detail what made this man a great painter, from his family, his life and even the times, society, government and the thoughts of the day. I seriously doubt that I can find a more comprehensive art book featuring this great craftsman.

The authors, publishers and the collection it contains are truly unique. This is a book that no painter should be missing, inspires Inness, and his emotions flow from the canvas to the minds of those who are lucky enough to know his work. I hope you agree too. Please, consider it.
