Are training devices worth it?

So maybe you’ve been exploring the latest releases in the training device market for 2012 and you have to admit you’re impressed. Some of these items have every imaginable bell and whistle. While they are stylish and modern, you can’t help but wonder if they are worth the expense.

So are they?

In general, the answer is no. While there are some workout machines, for example, that may be worth the investment, they are simply not necessary to see the results you want. In fact, most training devices do not focus on a full body workout. Most of these devices are muscle isolation devices that work only on one part of your body. Integration exercises are what you need to get in shape and stay that way. There really are better, and cheaper ways to improve your exercise time than investing in an expensive device.

Unless you really want to spend money on something with bells and whistles, keep your cash and consider doing these things instead:

  • Stick to the basics: In most cases, you will get just as good or even better results if you follow the basics of the exercise instead of spending money on devices. Running, walking, swimming, biking, lifting weights, doing something, anything that is physical. If you combine those cardio activities with some good old-fashioned strength training, you’ll see results for a lot less.
  • Join a gym or health center: Instead of buying your own fitness equipment, use the collection of a gym or fitness center. In this way, you can take advantage of a large number of machines and devices without having to buy all of them or maintain them. Let someone else bear all the maintenance and upkeep headaches.
  • Get a personal trainer: Instead of spending your money on a device that may or may not work, hire a health coach or educator to develop a program that you enjoy and can follow to achieve weight loss success. Personal trainers can help you develop a program that is tailored just for you and can motivate you to achieve your goals. Find someone who will guarantee results.
  • Eat Right – There is no device that can replace this key weight loss component. If you want to be truly successful, you will need to learn to eat healthier. A balanced, calorie-conscious diet can get you where you want to go, especially when combined with a smart exercise routine. If you need nutrition education, spend your money there.

Training devices are fun and can add some excitement to a routine. However, they are not necessary to achieve your goals. Instead of wasting your money on a product that won’t help you enjoy a true full-body workout, stick to the basics, rely on some feedback from the pros, and learn how to eat better to achieve the positive changes you’re looking for. You can challenge yourself in many different ways.
