Apps that help children with autism

There has been a more than 30% increase in the number of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder since 2012. Reportedly, one in 68 children is on the spectrum these days. Most of them find it difficult to convey what they think or feel, either verbally or non-verbally. It is usually a constant challenge that they face.

Show this: Steve and Frank, both five years old, were having some friendly play time when they had a communication breakdown. Frank, who had autism, did not respond to Steve after about 20 minutes of play. A frustrated Steve pushed Frank down a ladder, causing him to fall and injure himself.

Speech therapist Hannah Adler decided to tackle the problem and created a communication app for autistic children. He repeated the incident where Steve pushed Frank, even taking pictures of the room to design the background for the app. He took photos of the children to use as characters in the app. Hannah showed a replay of the fight and the children were able to identify what was wrong with their action.

Personalized stories can help children acquire communication skills and understand complex situations. And this is just one of the ways educators, therapists, and parents take advantage of tablets and smartphones to work with children who have an autism spectrum disorder.

When the iPad was launched in 2010, it was hailed as a miracle device. There weren’t many autism apps for kids available back then. But parents were quick to put their hands on the device. They threw the device to their children with special needs in the hope of some miracle. But that, unsurprisingly, never happened. The iPad was an electronic device and not a magical instrument.

Six years later, the iPad and tablets are playing a bigger role among people with autism. Tech companies, non-governmental organizations, and app creators are now exploring better ways to use smartphones and eyelashes to challenge autism.

Kids with special needs use apps in different ways. Lisa, Frank’s mother, says autism apps are helping her son to think visually and interact directly with content, without the cognitive obstacles of an input device like the mouse. The application divides complex concepts into easily understandable parts. He also helps Frank and others like him with articulation.

The token has given Frank more independence. Earlier, Frank was at a loss trying to figure out what to do for himself, if someone didn’t structure the day for him. But now you can spend time independently.

Hannah conducts workshops on the use of apps for autistic children and teaches parents the best ways to use them. She discourages parents from allowing their children to use a mobile device as a reward, such as allowing them to watch online videos or play games. She encourages people to seek out dynamic apps for autistic children that help address the core challenges of autism with fun and interaction.

Hannah says that it is very important for children with autism spectrum disorder to acquire and learn communication skills. But it must be done in a way that interests them.
