9 steps to take when you fear losing your job

Job loss rarely comes as a complete surprise. There are usually early signs like a merger or the announcement of a cost-cutting program. Armed with this information, you can prepare for a possible layoff.

Decide if you really want to keep your job

This is not a rhetorical question. You may be fully vested and sick of the ride. A fabulous severance package could be attractive. Or on the contrary, you like or need the job.

Act on your decision

If you want to keep your job, double down on your efforts at work, volunteer for more, and flirt as much as possible. If you like being on the fired list, work as usual and tell people you’re ready to go; you could get your wish.

Try to keep your fear in check

It is just a probability that you will lose your job, not a certainty. Think of the many people who were better off after losing their job. Do not panic.

Get clarity on activities you would do after job loss in addition to job search

Focus not on what you could lose, but on what you could gain: valuable time. Dream a little, whether it’s spending quality time with your family or a “once in a lifetime” vacation. Yes, you will eventually have to look for a job, but maybe you could take a month off beforehand.

Stay healthy and improve your health

Getting some exercise is always good, especially in times of stress and anxiety. If a layoff could mean the loss of valuable health care benefits, now might be the time to address some unresolved health issues.

simplify your life

Reduce clutter in your life. Recycle papers, donate clothes to charity, sell unused electronics, and maybe reduce your housing situation. The more stuff you can handle now, the less baggage you’ll have to take with you after layoff.

Get up to date with your finances

Count your assets, debts, expected compensation, unemployment and other income. Where are you now and in 12 months?

Understand your business timeline

When will decisions be announced? Maybe you have a good connection with Human Resources or your manager and they can give you a lead.

Relax

You did everything you could potentially do. You are well prepared for what may happen.
